A Partnership Dedicated to Performance and Innovation

At the beginning of 2013, the Peugeot 208 had the lowest CO2 emissions (99 grams per kilometer). However, Total and Peugeot wanted more and upped the ante by setting a goal to cut its emissions in half. On the performance side, the car needed to be sporty and be able to reach 100 kilometers an hour in eight seconds flat, like the Peugeot 208 GTI.

Different Technologies Combine to Create New Synergies

To make it work, specialists passionate about cars pooled their know-how and applied it to the task. The result was a high-performance fusion of cutting-edge solutions:

  • Innovative materials shaved 441 pounds off the car's weight. For example, a new resin lightened the fenders and hood by half and a composite leaf spring knocked 44 pounds off the car's total weight.
  • The powertrain, an offshoot of the Peugeot Sport 908 project, was redesigned and adapted as a hybrid, running on both gasoline and electric power.
  • Work focusing specifically on lubricants and greases reduced the mechanical friction that causes power losses. A new viscosity grade, 0W12, was purpose developed.
  • The aerodynamics and tire mount were optimized (the vehicle was redesigned to minimize air and rolling resistance). The drag coefficient (Cx) was lowered to 0.23 and air penetration (SCx) to under 0.5 kilogram meters (kg m).

Designing the Energy Efficiency of Tomorrow

Total and Peugeot won their gamble by combining their expertise. They left their targets in the dust: the Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE uses just 1.9 liters per 100 kilometers and emits just 46 grams of CO2 per kilometer — a world record for a non-rechargeable hybrid.

Besides the "technology demonstrator" effect, this project will positively impact the energy efficiency of production vehicles. By 2020, 80%-85% of new Peugeot cars will include the solutions tested on the 208 HYbrid FE. The first of those technologies — the engine and the lubricant and grease solutions — were incorporated into the Peugeot 208 HYbrid Air, presented at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.
