Art brings self-esteem to a community in Rio de Janeiro
Whoever visits the observation point located in the Prazeres community, in Rio de Janeiro, isn’t met just with a beautiful landscape of the “wonderful city”. Besides having one of the most beautiful views of Rio, in 2014 the spot also became an open-air art gallery through the “Caminho do Grafite” (Graffiti Pathway). The urban revitalization project supported by Total E&P do Brasil has taken culture and new opportunities to the Prazeres’ residents. Through the project, Total reinforces its commitment to contribute with the society development project, empowering this community to thrive and create their own initiatives.

Tourism as a new opportunity
The walls and houses located along the pathway that leads to the Prazeres observation point have been transformed into graffiti panels produced by 45 Brazilian and international artists. The whole revitalization took almost three months. The “Caminho do Grafite” has revitalized the area and has become a new tourist route that attracts hundreds of visitors from all over the world to the region. The residents themselves act as guides and have found in tourism a new source of income. “The idea behind the project was a touch of genius. First, it changed our self-esteem, because many residents did not even value their own homes. Today our space is better looking, valued, attracting tourists and moving the local economy,” says Igor Amaro, inhabitant of Prazeres, who works with the organization of events in the community.
Leisure for children
Besides the “Caminho do Grafite”, Total has also revitalized, in 2013, the Praça João Tuteia, a leisure area which is one of the main gathering points of the residents. The spot has gained gardens, toys and other improvements. Now, children, parents and young ones from the region have a new space to enjoy their moments of leisure, and all with a breathtaking view. Total has thus left unprecedented legacies to its host city by providing the community’s youth with new work opportunities, quality leisure and, most importantly, a high self-esteem.
