Total supports Rugby in Brazil and encourages young talents
In 2016, Brazil hosted, for the first time in its history, the Olympic Games, the world’s largest multi-sport event. Rugby, a traditional and very popular sport among Europeans, made its Olympic debut with the ‘sevens’ modality. The sport has been attracting more and more Brazilian fans since then.
Total is a long-term sponsor of rugby worldwide. In Brazil, the company has started to invest in several initiatives focused on the sport in 2015. Through the support, Total helps disseminate rugby’s culture and values of respect, passion, discipline, solidarity and integrity among Brazilians – values that also motivate Total employees in their daily jobs around the world.

Total, disseminating rugby's energy
Total believes in the energy of rugby and supports the sport through partnerships with the Brazilian Rugby Confederation (CBRu). The goal is to promote the sport and make it popular amongst Brazilians. To that end, Total sponsors key events within the rugby universe, such as the National Super Sevens Male Rugby Tournament and the Hemispheres Cup.
The Super Sevens Tournament counts on Total’s sponsorship for the second year in a row (2016 and 2017). The championship brings Brazil’s top rugby sevens players together, including members of the official national team.
The Hemispheres Cup was held in June 2016 in Macapá, state of Amapá and brought together Brazil and Kenya, two of the top 40 teams in the world. Supported by the Government of Amapá, the event took the professional rugby to the north of Brazil for the first time.
Encouraging Brazilian rugby’s young talents
Since 2015, Total also supports the “We are Better Together” project in Brazil in partnership with Guanabara Rugby Club. The main objectives are to identify and coach young Brazilian rugby talents, promoting social inclusion and development of young people through sport. In its initial phase, in 2015, the project selected 35 athletes with high potential from different regions in Brazil and selected 14 young people to compose and strengthen the Guanabara sevens team, today called Guana-Total.
The rookie athletes were gathered in Rio and underwent intense training to develop and improve teamwork and their individual skills. After only two months, they put the core values of rugby into practice. They overcame challenges and showed how to be better together by winning two major championships of the Brazilian rugby sevens circuit. These were the first steps of a story that has been rapidly progressing, representing the true energy of the sport.
